What is Solar Air Conditioning?

Solar air conditioning refers to any air conditioning (cooling) system that uses solar power.

This can be done through passive solar, solar thermal energy conversion and photovoltaic conversion (sunlight to electricity – PV).  All of our solar air conditioners use solar PV power. As the technology develops, solar air conditioners play an increasing role in zero-energy and energy-plus building designs.

Types of Solar PV air conditioner

We have two types of solar air conditioners, off-grid DC48V and ACDC hybrid.

 1. A 100% off grid unit / DC48V solar air conditioner

These units will run on solar during the day and have battery storage for running at night. Depending where they are installed the amount of solar panels and the size of battery storage needed to run the units will depend on the amount of sun light hours available. The longer you require the systems to run after the sun goes down, more panels and batteries are needed.

The solar panels charge the batteries during the daytime and supply power to the air conditioner at the same time. At night time, all power will be from charged batteries.

2. ACDC Hybrid Solar air conditioner

Our AC/DC units are available in three main sizes at 3.5, 5.0 &7.0 kws. These units will run on solar during the day and auto blend/switch to grid power at night. They can not have battery back-up for night operation unless the batteries have an inverter. They are perfect for schools or offices where the majority of demand is day use.

The Hybrid solar air conditioner will utilize the maximum amount of available solar power drawn from the PV modules directly during the day even if there is no grid-tied utility power at all.

Even when the sun is not shining at all (eg. at night), our ultrahigh efficient heat pumps (A SEER 23 rating without solar and SEER 35 with solar) will keep you comfortable and save you money using far less electricity than a normal A/C or heat pump of the same capacity.

Hybrid ACDC Solar Air Conditioner

The Solar DC power directly replaces an equivalent amount of AC power from your electricity supplier and cuts daytime energy costs by up to 80%-100%.

– Available in 3.5, 5.0 & 7.0 kw Cooling & Heating

– Runs on Solar DC Power and AC Power

– Accepts DC Power directly from Solar Panels.

– No batteries or inverter controller required

Solar Powered Split Air Conditioner

Solar AC DC Australia has the right Solar Powered Split Air Conditioner For You

Solar AC DC Australia are known for our commitment to providing high quality products at the cutting edge of technology, and that includes our solar-powered split air conditioner. The sun’s power is responsible for the heat that requires you to use an air conditioner in the first place. With one of our solar powered split ac units, its power can help banish that heat, keeping your house cool while lowering your energy costs in the long run.

A Short Buyer’s Guide for A Solar Split System Air Conditioner

With solar-powered air conditioners, there are a lot of options available, and it can be difficult for consumers to find the right unit for their home and needs. There are on grid and off grid models as well as hybrid models. Here is a short guide to these three types detailing their benefits:

An on grid air conditioner is run through the power grid like the rest of the electrical devices in your home. With these units, you pay the same rate for powering it as you pay for your other devices, and if the power goes out, so does your air conditioning.
Our off gird models use a combination of solar panels and batteries to provide power to your ac unit. This arrangement effectively reduces the operating costs by one hundred percent during the day and night and is the perfect option for those living off the grid or for boats, motorhomes, or remote locations away from utilities.
The hybrid system offers the best of both on and off grid systems. During the day, when it is needed the most, it can operate on up to one hundred percent on power from solar panels. When the sun sets, and the power from the solar panels wanes, the hybrid system switches back to the grid.

Why Solar AC DC Australia’s solar-powered split system air conditioner is Cost-Effective

The air conditioner is often the single largest energy-consuming device in the average home, and it is needed the most during the day when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Here are a few ways solar powered air conditioners can save you money:

Using the energy from the sun to power your air conditioner can reduce and sometimes completely remove the operating cost of the unit, drastically reducing your power bill.
Our hybrid units can be programmed only to use the connected solar panels for power. When they offer insufficient energy, the unit will shut down and not use energy from the grid.
Another benefit from the hybrid unit is our Solar Hybrid Inverter with its incredible efficiency minimises wasted energy.

How does a Solar Panel work?

What are solar panels?

The term solar panels is often used for a few different types of products that produce energy by collecting sunlight.

We most commonly use the phrase to refer to the type that converts sunlight directly into DC electricity. Less frequently, people will use the term in reference to solar thermal collectors, which typically heats a liquid such as water, or solar air heaters, which heats air directly.

How does a solar panel work?

Quick Version
Rays of sunlight hit solar cells, pushing the electrons in the cell through the wires to create electricity.

This electricity is in one direction, so it is called DC, for Direct Current. As opposed to AC, for Alternating Current, where the electrons are going back and forth 50-60 times (50-60Hz) per second. That is why for most installations, you need an inverter. An inverter changes the DC to AC and makes it usable with your home’s appliances.

Detailed Version
On one side of the solar cell, there’s an overabundance of electrons and on the other side there is a lack of electrons. Manufacturers create this static imbalance of charges on the cell by doping each side of the silicon solar cell with different chemicals (e.g. phosphorous on one side and boron on the other).

Wires or soldered leads are effectively connected to each side of the cell. The positive and negative wires go to whatever you want to charge or power.

Connecting the leads in itself to an electrical load, while closing the current path, does not allow to the electrons to flow, despite the positive and negative imbalance. It takes sunlight hitting the silicon in the solar cells to loosen up electrons.

As soon as they are freed up, they immediately start flowing through the wires to power your electrical loads.

The more sunlight that shines on the cells, the more electrons loosen up, the more electrical current flows and the more power it produces.

Solar Panel Mounts

So now you need to mount your Solar panels.

Do you plan to mount the modules on the roof, the ground, or on a pole in the yard?

Site analysis is, obviously, a very important aspect of sizing and building a solar power system. An additional consideration is the load the solar panels will be powering.

Understanding what the panels will be powering allows you to select the best solar panel mounts for your specific application.

For example, a typical grid-tied solar powered system on a residential home will have significantly different solar panel mounting needs than panels powering a solar powered water pump in an agricultural setting. Whether you are mounting solar panels on a residential home, tiny house, remote cabin or for agricultural purposes, Solar AC DC has your solar panel mounting needs covered.

Energy Efficient Air Conditioner

Choosing an Energy-Efficient Air Conditioner for a Solar Setup

Is there an energy-efficient air conditioner out there that could provide your home with strong cooling capabilities without a huge price tag attached? Finding a good answer to that question requires some lateral thinking — maybe you shouldn’t look solely at aircon units themselves, but how you power them, too. At Solar AC DC Australia, we’re excited to provide homeowners with an option for running an aircon unit from solar power when available.

What You Should Know About Our Energy Saving Air Conditioners

What allows the products we import to stand out in terms of functionality and performance? Here are some fast facts to keep in mind as you do more research:

Our hybrid air conditioning units offer the best of both worlds, providing for complete energy-independent operation during the day with the option to maintain interior comfort at night by switching back to grid power.
No inverters are necessary. That’s right: you don’t need to continually expand your investment during the setup phase because of the need for additional equipment. A power-saving air conditioner supplied by Solar AC DC Australia can receive a direct DC power connection from your PV panels without complicated additional wiring.
No need to install a massive solar farm just to be able to enjoy air conditioning during the hottest part of the day. It can take as few as four 300W-rated panels to provide 100% of the energy necessary to heat or cool the property.

Convenience, cool air, and more cash in your pocket at the end of the day — what’s not to like?

Signs You Should Invest in an Energy Saving Aircon

Replacing your existing aircon with a new unit or adding one to a property that hasn’t had one before might seem like more trouble than it’s worth. However, that’s far from the truth — and if you spot one of the following signs in your life, it’s time to investigate further:

You’re looking for ways to increase your independence from the grid or to further reduce your energy costs by investigating alternative and renewable options.
You have the opportunity to install new or additional PV panels on your property, and you’d like to explore options for making the most of that power in ways that do not require large battery packs.
You’re setting up or modifying a space in rural Australia that has limited or no regular access to grid power.

As technology continues to evolve, don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of the latest advancements.

What You Stand to Gain if You Use Solar AC DC Australia

When you purchase a Solar AC DC solar hybrid air conditioner, you will be keeping your home fresh while at the same time lowering your energy usage substantially. People use air conditioning because the energy of the sun heats their homes to an uncomfortable level. Using that same energy to banish the harsh heat of the sun makes logical sense. A few of the other benefits of buying one of our hybrid ACs are:

Unlike many other hybrid AC systems, ours do not use electronic inverters. An inverter converts DC to AC. These systems have improved their efficiency, but there is still a significant loss of energy when they are inverted. Our system removes that problem.
Many customers find that their hybrid system can handle all their air conditioning needs without any power from the grid. It is much hotter during the day when the sun’s rays are shining brightly, and this is the same time the solar panels are collecting the most energy.
For true off grid air conditioning, the hybrid system can be set only to take power from the solar panels. When the sun sets, the system shuts off, which reduces your operating costs to zero.

Hybrid Air Conditioner

Get a Hybrid Air Conditioner From Solar AC DC Australia

Solar AC DC Australia is widely known for our commitment to protecting the environment, and that is why we offer a hybrid air conditioner. Reduce or even eliminate the energy costs involved in keeping your home cool with one of our hybrid solar AC units. These hybrid air conditioners can run off solar panels during the day, when you need their cool air the most and switch to the grid when the sun goes down.

How Much Do You Know About A Solar Hybrid Air Conditioner

Solar technology has been advancing in leaps and bounds, so, understandably, many customers are not familiar with some of these developments as they relate to a hybrid air conditioning system. These hybrid systems take the best parts of off-grid solar air conditioners and the conventional ones that run on the grid. Here are a few facts about these innovative air conditioning systems:

In an off grid solar air conditioning system, solar panels gather the energy of the sun to power the air con and to store in batteries for use when the sun has set. These all run on DC (direct current) and are entirely separate from the AC (alternating current) of the power grid.
A hybrid air conditioning system applies solar panels to power the unit during the day but does not contain a bank of batteries for use when the sun is down. Instead, it is connected to the power grid and uses it for any energy needs larger than the solar panels can provide. For daytime use, when you need your AC the most, this can cut energy costs from 80 to 100%.
Because the hybrid unit accepts DC power directly from the solar panels, it can keep your home cool even in power disruptions during the day.

The Best Advice You Can Hear Regarding A Hybrid AC Unit

For frequent users of air conditioning, a hybrid system will pay for itself with reduced energy costs, but remembering the following points will help you get the most out of your unit:

The number of solar panels can vary depending on your needs. As hybrid systems do not have a bank of batteries, it is best to maximise panels to power the system.
Even when there is nobody home during the day, keeping the hybrid system running when the sun is shining is the best option. This method will use the energy from the solar panels to keep your home cool for when you return. By doing this, you will keep your operating costs down compared to cranking the unit up when you get home.
For those that want true off grid air conditioning, one of our DC models might be a better option. These include a bank of batteries that store any excess energy for later use.

Signs You Should Invest in an AC DC Solar Air Conditioner

Almost anyone who regularly uses air conditioning can benefit from one of our hybrid units, but there are a few apparent signs to look for to know if one of these systems is right for you. If any of the following fit your situation, it might be time for a hybrid AC unit:

Consider at what times you use your air conditioner right now. If you use it a lot during the day or in the late afternoon, a hybrid unit would be able to reduce your operating costs considerably.
Air conditioners are often the largest single user of electrical power in the average home. Determine how much of your power bill comes from your AC unit and envision keeping your home cool without that cost.
If you live in a remote area, power outages can be more frequent and longer-lasting. Instead of suffering when the power goes out again, a hybrid AC can keep your home cooler while you wait for the electricity to come back on.

How quickly could my investment pay for itself? Let’s crunch the numbers together.

Why an Off-grid AC Solar System from Solar AC DC Australia is a Cost-Effective Choice

Most homeowners know that adding anything related to solar power can mean a hefty investment, even if it pays dividends down the road. How can you ensure you’re making the right selection now? Take a look at the other ways you save money with our help:

No need for an inverter. Many other solar setups require conversion from the DC power produced at the panel to the AC power most appliances use to run. Our hybrid unit, however, does not — it can use a direct DC connection to draw all the energy it needs directly from your panels.
Easy installation and no special maintenance needs. While a licensed installer must set up the unit on your property, it otherwise functions as a typical aircon, so there’s no need to worry about unplanned expenses.
Dramatically drops your power bills by removing the need for any grid or generator power to run an aircon. During field tests, a 97% reduction in energy consumption for the aircon, was typical, representing incredible savings.

Signs You Should Invest in an Off-Grid AC Unit

Not sure if this is the right choice for your home? It might be time to take a step back and have a closer look at the circumstances you’re in to determine if it’s a good idea. Here are the signs that say it is:

Electrical bills that are too high in the summer. When the heat is at its worst, so too is your spend at its largest. Now is an excellent time to look for ways to cut that number down to size.
A lack of dependable access to other sources of electricity, especially in applications that are truly “off-grid”. When you want cool air in a place you might not usually have it; an off-grid solar-powered air conditioner is the right choice.
You want to fit a solar system that reduces your carbon footprint as much as possible. Embrace environmental responsibility with hardware that serves your needs and your goals.

Solar Powered Air Conditioner

Solar Powered Air Conditioner
Keep Your Home and RV Cool with a Solar Powered Air Conditioner

Australia is renowned for its heat, and savvy Australians have started saving money by using a solar-powered air conditioner. This technology is the perfect modern development to support sustainable initiatives while virtually eliminating energy costs associated with air conditioning. Keep reading below to learn valuable information about our solar air-con systems and how they can help you.

Fast Facts about Solar Aircon

The solar air conditioning system is an essential part of satisfying our future energy needs. Consider the following points regarding sustainability:

After the solar panels are constructed, these devices don’t require any fossil fuels to operate. Instead, the solar panels work solely off the power of the sun once they’re installed into the system.
A solar powered air conditioner doesn’t only work during the day. You can store excess energy in batteries so that you still have access to power even when the sun is down.
You can choose between hybrid air conditioning or 100% off-grid air conditioners. Our team is familiar with both and can address the major distinctions between them so that you understand why we may recommend one model over the other.

Why Solar Powered Air Con Is Cost-Effective

Next, it’s essential to recognise how solar power proves to be a cost-effective method of cooling considering the initial investment.

While there are many conveniences such as the power for your air conditioner still running even if there’s a downed power line, the main benefit is in the decreased monthly power bills that add up over the life of the system.
Unlike a gas generator, solar panels don’t have moving parts that are prone to breakage. You’ll need to keep the panels clean and ensure that the connections remain safe, but otherwise, the system is very low-maintenance.
When you use a solar air conditioning system for your RV, you no longer need the vehicle’s engine to be running to get cool air. You can save on gas by turning off the RV and letting the sun power the air conditioner in the closed space so that you come back to a nice, cool RV after a day in the sun.
Solar power literally takes energy from the sun shining down on the earth. This energy is practically free, simply begging to be utilised. We’re taking a page from the plants’ book and absorbing the energy that the sun is giving away for free.

Tips for Getting More Value out of a Solar Air Conditioner in Australia

We have several recommendations regarding how you can get the most out of a solar panel air conditioner:

Rely on a system made from high-quality materials. The technology behind solar energy is improving every year, yet it remains fragile if dealt with harshly. Show the equipment care and respect, and you’ll have an air conditioner that remains with you and works well for years to come. Use solar panels that are suited to the climate conditions around you. For example, we have a poly solar panel that’s PID-free and is ideal for high heat or high humidity environments. This panel can maintain higher efficiency under those circumstances than more general panels.
Be intentional about where you place the panels on your home. Pay attention to where the sun falls and how much direct sunlight hits the spots you’re considering installing these panels. If you optimise the spots with the fewest obstructions and the greatest amount of daylight exposure, then you get more value from your panels.

An on the grid air conditioner is run through the power grid like the rest of the electrical devices in your home. With these units, you pay the same rate for powering it as you pay for your other devices, and if the power goes out, so does your air conditioning.
Our off grid models use a combination of solar panels and batteries to provide power to your ac unit. This arrangement effectively reduces the operating costs by up to one hundred percent during the day and night and is the perfect option for those living off grid or for boats, motorhomes, or remote locations away from utilities.

Another benefit from the hybrid unit is our Solar Hybrid Inverter with its incredible efficiency minimising wasted energy.

Enjoy a cooler home with an AC unit powered exclusively through solar panels, or use one of our hybrid models that can take power from the grid when needed. Our solar powered AC units are the highest quality available in the world.

A Short Buyer’s Guide for a DC Powered Air Conditioner

A DC powered air conditioner is designed to run entirely off the grid using a combination of solar panels and batteries to store the sun’s energy for use when it sets or can’t provide enough power for your system. Here are a few things to consider when looking to buy a DC powered AC unit:

One of the most significant benefits for such a system, beyond reducing the operating cost of the unit by one hundred percent, is the lack of a power inverter. Power grids use AC or alternating current while batteries, solar panels, and off grid ac units operate on DC or direct current. Power inverters always result in some waste or power loss. Without an inverter, your system will run more efficiently.

Because all your AC unit’s power comes from the solar panels, you should install enough of them to provide for your needs. We suggest installing four to nine panels, but the perfect number will depend on your home’s ac needs. Should your needs grow, you can add more solar panels later.

Batteries are required to provide power when the sun’s rays are insufficient. Talk to us to determine the best quantity and size for your home.

What You Can Expect From Solar AC DC Australia Regarding A Solar Powered DC Air Conditioner

There are several benefits that you can expect when you install one of our off the grid solar powered air conditioners. Among them are the following:

Air conditioning uses a lot of power, and with our off grid DC units those operating costs can disappear entirely.
Power grids can go down, leaving homes without an off grid ac unit sweltering until the power is restored. Our DC models will keep operating in these situations.

Are Solar Systems Practical For Home Owners

We’re guessing you wouldn’t have come here if you didn’t have a hunch they probably were. But just in case, let’s review when solar systems are practical for homes and when they’re not.

If you own a home or cabin (or a tiny home who can be parked such that…) and you have a roof that roughly points north or west with no shading by trees, hills, other homes from around 9AM to 5PM, then you have some prime real estate for putting a solar system on.

The cost has dropped significantly in the last several years, making it such that, with tax incentives or rebates, a grid-tied solar system will pay for itself in just a few years. Essentially, for the price of a few years electricity, you get 25 to 35 years of electricity. In fact, solar systems will likely keep on producing electricity at a lower rate for even decades after that.

Solar power systems are not practical for locations that get lots of shade throughout the day. That said, with the advent of micro inverters and grid-tie inverters that have DC optimizers connected to each individual solar panel, some locations with a little bit of shading can still be an option.
